New York State, in an effort to fight refund fraud, recently announced that taxpayers will need to provide their Driver’s License Number (or state issued ID number) as well as the unique “Document ID Number” from their license on their returns.  Failure to provide this information may significantly delay refunds.

Your “Document ID Number” is the series of letters and numbers on the lower right hand corner of the old style licenses.  It is the number on the back of the new style licenses just above the anatomical gift box.

The IRS also prefers that we provide the license number, as do a number of other states if you are from a state other than New York. There is no need to provide a “Document ID number” if your license is from another state.
